In order to better understand the makeup of our universe, the use of particle accelerators have become an essential tool in this endeavor. Reliable vacuum equipment is a very important issue, taking into account that particle accelerators are designed to operate in excess of 15 years. Pfeiffer Vacuum's first turbopumps have been successfully used at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for over 40 years. Over the years, Pfeiffer Vacuum has supplied CERN components for vacuum measurement, analytics and chamber materials. Accelerator applications are particularly demanding due to the ambient conditions related to radiation and electrical or magnetic fields. Pfeiffer Vacuum has developed solutions for accelerators which have proven to be reliable over many years. Vacuum solutions include collimators, turbopumps for a radioactive environment, fluorine free backing pumps, gauges, mass spectrometers and leak detectors.
