Course content

Participants will learn to understand and create testing specifications for mass-produced components. They will gain practical experience in performing appropriate test methods. However, participants will not be trained on further steps for localizing leaks in mass-produced components.

Fundamentals

  • Terms and definitions in the field of leak detection technology
  • How detectors and devices work
  • Physical fundamentals
  • Methods of leak testing
    a) at overpressure (Micro-Flow)
    b) at atmospheric pressure (sniffing, accumulation method)
    c) under vacuum (helium spraying, integral and partial vacuum method)
  • Exemplary calculations of leakage rates as a function of flow through the leak, operating and test medium, pressure, and temperature
  • How practical specification can be created
  • Practical use of helium leak detection in different areas such as coating systems, large-scale research, and heat exchangers
  • Use of different test gases in leak detection

Applications

  • Presentation of selected test methods according to DIN EN 1779
  • Hands-on training using common test methods.
  • Influence of environmental parameters: materials, temperature, humidity, conductance, outgassing etc.
  • Localization of leaks in mass-produced components
  • Application examples of learned test methods
  • Testing of components provided by the participants (by prior arrangement)
